Light and Power is a loosely historical opera about the rivalry between American inventors Nikola Tesla and Thomas Edison, and the fate of electric power that hangs in the balance. May or may not include cyborgs from the future. Commissioned by the Juventas New Music Ensemble and Boston Opera Collaborative to be premiered in May 2011. Libretto by Jillian Burcar.

Warping and Splintering is an expanded version of Splintering (2009), and was presented as my doctoral dissertation at the USC Thornton School of Music.

If a hurled object could be frozen in time at the moment of impact -- its form still visible though fractured into countless pieces -- this would be a pretty good representation of Splintering. The musical material never gets a complete presentation; it is always being broken down into its component parts, until one of those parts becomes the focus of the next dismantling. This culminates in the statement of a single unison line that is passed around the entire orchestra at lightning speed. Phantoms of other melodies are hazily suggested but never settled upon. We don't quite get The Big Picture, but if we see it from enough perspectives, maybe we can piece it back together.

Splintering was premiered on February 11, 2010 by the USC Thornton Symphony under the direction of Donald Crockett.
